The leading analysis in the field of oil testing for the monitoring of the wear of rotating machinery and equipment is Ferrography analysis of wear.
The analysis includes quantitative and qualitative testing of the wear particles. The wear particles are separated from the oil and grease samples and are examined under a microscope. We obtain information on wear particles ranging in size from sub-microns to hundreds of microns.
According to tribology (the wear theory), different wear mechanisms produce wear particles having different characteristic morphologies.
Identification of the particles’ concentration, size, chemical composition, and morphology makes it possible to determine the wear level of the machine from which the samples are taken and focus on the damage to problematic components. This way maintenance teams can be alerted to problems related to bearings, gears, corrosion, misalignment, etc. Ferrography analysis has the significant added value of regular monitoring and follow-up of the development of wear.
